The client approached Klargester to discuss the options for replacing a failing brick Septic Tank. Key criteria were to reduce frequency of tank-emptying visits and to use existing soakaway without the risk of blockage. Major concern was also to reduce pollution of surrounding streams and watercourses.

The nine houses totalled a population equivalent of 60. In addition to the bedrooms each house featured numerous bathrooms, washing machines and potentially extra dishwashers that may be added by new homebuyers.

Notes

A new development on a brownfield site. Developer was looking to build nine individual homes of various sizes linked to a communal sewer. Sewer pipe would feed to a pumping station and then into a treatment plant located uphill in neighbouring farmland.

Sewage plant would have to possess performance + capacity to cope with any future additional inflow, (such as dishwashers) to be fitted by new owners.

After more than 18 months of trying to cope with an overflowing septic tank situated half-way down the garden, Toby Sermon finally decided enough was enough.

The smell was so appalling that Toby and his family rarely went into the garden. He and his wife constantly worried about the obvious health risks to their two young children, as well as the dangers inherent in having as Toby describes it, “essentially a 12 foot hole with an aluminium cover” close to where his daughter played with their family dog.

Requirements

Depot split into two external hard standing areas and internal maintenance bays with integrated floor drainage (totalling an area of 4046 sq metres). Within this site is located a vehicle washdown bay.

NS80 Class 1 Full Retention Separator + 8000 litre Washdown Separator.

Notes

Operated 24hrs, the truck maintenance depot is a site with a large area of concrete hardstanding. In addition to rainwater entering the drains are an array of pollutants - these include oil, grease, road tar and dirt, diesel fuel, and hydraulic fluid. A vehicle washdown bay also produces a quantity of road grit, dirt and debris.

The total site’s drainage is linked into the local foul sewer network and is regularly monitored by the local water authority.
